Preconditions

• sidebar.expandOnHover: true
• sidebar.revamp: true
• ensure that vertical tabs are enabled

Steps to reproduce

1. Open the Customize Sidebar.
2. Click on the Expand Sidebar button.
3. Click Move the sidebar to the right/ left.
4. Hover over the sidebar launcher.

Expected result

• The sidebar is expanded.

Actual result

• Nothing happens.

Regression range

• Not a regression, new feature.

Hello! I can still reproduce this with 138.0a1 (20250319094349) on a new profile. See the attached screen recording. If more information is needed please let me know.

So what's happening here is that when you toggle the sidebar to expand using the toggle button in the toolbar, it temporarily removes the expand on hover functionality. This was specifically requested behavior from UX. Expand on hover should only happen from the collapsed stated. The confusion here lies with the fact that the sidebar seems to collapse down once we move it to the left/right but the expand on hover functionality is still removed.
We should either:

• Keep it expanded when moved to the other side with expand on hover functionality returning only after you've used the toolbar button to collapse it back down OR
• Keep it collapsed when moved to the other side and add back the expand on hover functionality right away (I'd think this is the way to go, but I'll confirm with UX)

Hey Kelly, I think we should go with option 1.

Since it's already expanded it makes sense to keep it expanded. Once it's collapsed with the sidebar icon my assumption is that the expectation would be for it to expand on hover again.

Confirming the fix from bug 1950419 with Firefox 138.0a1 (2025-03-27) on Windows 10x64, macOS 11 and Ubuntu 24. After following the steps from comment 0 the sidebar remains expanded and the hover functionality will function again after using the sidebar toolbar button as stated on comment 4.
