Steps to reproduce:
I had a mail filter item with an empty filter criterion line that I had forgotten to delete before closing the Mail Filters window.
Actual results:
I had recently registered on the arxiv.org site, where one email address they use is
When I went to run filters, three such emails were immediately deleted (not in Trash. Deleted). I eventually found the issue in the one filter criterion line that was empty. Deleting that solved the problem.
Expected results:
Nothing. No filter item for this "e-prints@arxiv.org" address existed.

What criteria was set to empty?

In this case, "From" and "Contains" are selected, then the criterion is empty. This was enough to reproduce the behavior with the hyphen-containing username in the email address.
