User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.3b) Gecko/20030210 Build Identifier: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.3b) Gecko/20030210 When I set Mozilla to be my default browser in Edit|Preferences|Navigator, it also sets itself as my default mail handler, Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1.Set Mozilla as default browser 2.Try to click on a link in a web page that has contains a "mailto" statement 3. XP ignores my default mail setting in MS Outlook that makes it my default mail handler and loads Mozilla mail (regardless of whether Mozilla is loaded at the time or not. 4.Keeps doing this until I re-set IE to be my default browser, at which time Outlook then resumes being my default mail handler. Actual Results: If I keep mozilla as my default browser XP ignores my default mail setting to Outlook XP Expected Results: Set itself as my browser and left my mail settings alone.
Try unmarking "Use Mozilla Mail as the default mail application" under Preferences - Mail&Newsgroups. Should work then.
The box in Mail&Newsgroups is unchecked. Still happens as I described.
Does this also happen if you click the mailto: link in IE? Or only in Mozilla? (When Mozilla is the default browser, of course.)

Good question: when I click the mailto: link in Mozilla, it calls Mozilla mail regardless of whether Mozilla is the default browser or not. At that time, Mozilla mail is not set as the default mail app. In IE, IE calls Outlook regardless of what the default browser is and Outlook is set as default mail.
IE and Firebird under Windows consider the registry key My Computer\HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\mailto\shell\open\command which determines what to do with mailto-Links. Mozilla seems to ignore this setting and always use Mozilla Mail instead to handle mailto-Links. See also bug #56478, which might be related to this one...
Mozilla Mail isn't set as default, it's just that Mozilla navigator ignores the default mail client. *** This bug has been marked as a duplicate of 11459 ***

Rather than make you read all of the very long and tedious bug 11459, here's how to fix this problem under Windows (and Mac, or so they tell me): Set the Mozilla preference network.protocol-handler.external.mailto to be True; and make sure the 'mailto' registry key described in comment 5 is set correctly. Mozilla will then use the correct mailer for mailto links. Bug 56478 is related, but is Linux-specific. Verifying dupe.
