If performing a search for sender or subject - contains or is 0 results are
returned when I know that messages that fit the search criterion are there. The
same error does not occur when searching mail folders.

No - not really related to bug 196430.
I can select sender, subject, contains etc just fine. The process works 100% as
it should when searching one of my mail accounts. However, in my threee news
accounts 0 results are returned even when I know there are multiple messages
that match my search criteria exactly. 
This bug does not seem to be theme reliant. I checked in Modern, classic and
Pinball.
I saw the same bug in 1.3b

I can confirm, that a search returns always 0, but the messages ARE there. If I
type the same search criteria in the textbox above the message list, the
news-messages will be found!

I will attach a screen shot, which shows that behaviour.

I confirm this bug. Search returns always 0 messages when searching in NEWS.
