User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 10.0; Win64; x64) AppleWebKit/537.36 (KHTML, like Gecko) Chrome/138.0.0.0 Safari/537.36 Edg/138.0.0.0
Steps to reproduce:
1.- Open an email with an attachment.
2.- Right-click the attachment > choose “Save As”.
3.- Modify the filename.
4.- Select a destination folder.
5.- Save
Actual results:
The file is not saved.
Expected results:
The file should save correctly even when the filename is modified before saving.
Since updating to Thunderbird version 140.0.1 ESR (64-bit) on Windows, I am unable to save email attachments using the “Save As” option if I change the filename before saving. This issue affects all file types (PDF, Excel, etc.) and occurs regardless of the destination folder (Documents, Desktop, etc.). However, if I first open the attachment and then save it using the external application (such as Excel or Adobe Reader), it saves correctly. This issue did not exist in previous Thunderbird versions.

I don't have esr on Windows right now but I can't reproduce it on the release version (141.0) on Windows 10 or 11 either.

I’d like to clarify and expand on this issue. In my case, the problem occurs when saving any email attachment from Thunderbird using “Save As” — even when the filename is not modified.
I’ve identified that McAfee LiveSafe’s real-time scanning is blocking the save operation. Adding thunderbird.exe to the exclusion list does not resolve the issue. The only workaround is to temporarily disable real-time scanning, after which attachments save correctly.
I’ve already reported this issue to McAfee support, but they have not been able to provide a solution so far.
This suggests the issue is not caused by Thunderbird itself, but by interference from McAfee. I believe this is important to note, as it affects users regardless of filename changes.

I also tested Thunderbird in Troubleshooting Mode, but it did not resolve the issue.

Just wanted to share an additional data point that might help narrow down the issue. I tested saving attachments using the Outlook mail application on Windows 11, with McAfee LiveSafe real-time scanning enabled, and there was no conflict. Attachments save correctly, even when renaming the file before saving.
This suggests the issue may be specific to Thunderbird’s interaction with McAfee, since Outlook does not exhibit the same behavior under identical conditions.
