User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.0; en-US; rv:1.3) Gecko/20030312
Build Identifier: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.0; en-US; rv:1.3) Gecko/20030312

My MailNews is configured to talk to an exchange server. I am using filters to
move Emails from the inbox to local folders. This marks the Emails as deleted,
and they do not appear in the inbox any longer. However, when I select a
different Mail folder, and then return to the inbox, the deleted messages appear
(having a red 'x'). The deleted messages should not be displayed.

Or alternatively (and this would be cool) if there is a toggle in the menu to
control whether deleted messages are displayed or not. Views cannot filter this out.

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Use an IMAP account and inbox filtering that moves Emails to local folders,
deleting them from the inbox. The messages are not in the message list any longer.
2. Switch to a different folder.
3. Switch back to inbox. The deleted messages now all appear in the message list.

Actual Results:
The deleted messages show in the message list.

Expected Results:
MailNews should not display messages that are deleted unless told to do so.

Happens in both Modern and Orbit Retro themes, so it's probably not theme
related. There's no crash. Just a minor annoyance.
I should mention that my delete mode is "mark deleted", and not "move to trash".
Since Exchange does not seem to have a trash can, I had to pick the latter.
Uhm, make that "former", not "latter", in my previous comment. Hm. I *did* have
coffee this morning.

This doesn't happen when it's move to trash delete mode, since the Email isn't
actually there anymore in the inbox.
Christian:

Is this still happening?

> My MailNews is configured to talk to an exchange server

IMAP mode? POP3?

There are many many similar bugs already in Bugzilla -- search for
Product: Mail/News
Summary: unread
Well, I since then found the Exchange Server's trash can and switched to "move
to trash". I suppose I could switch back. I'm also using Thunderbird 0.3 to read
mail (well, mostly) so I don't know if it happens there.

As you can see in the first comment entry I was using IMAP mode to talk to the
Exchange server.
I can definitely reproduce this behavior on Mozilla Suite 1.5 GA:
  Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.0; en-US; rv:1.5) Gecko/20031007

I'll attempt to see if Thunderbird does this also.
Also seems to appear on Thunderbird "Mozilla Thunderbird 0.3 (20031013)"

Marked-as-deleted Emails still show up.
I could attach my Thunderbird prefs.js if you need it.
Thanks ... A few questions to clarify the bug; which of these behaviors do you
see in Moz and Thunderbird?:

A) Deleted messages dissapear AND THEN REAPPEAR?
Comment #0: "This marks the Emails as deleted, and they do not appear in the
inbox any longer. However, when I select a different Mail folder, and then
return to the inbox, the deleted messages appear ..."

B) Deleted messages never dissapear, but are displayed with a red 'x'.
Comment #0: "the deleted messages appear (having a red 'x'). The deleted
messages should not be displayed. ... Or alternatively (and this would be
cool) if there is a toggle in the menu to control whether deleted messages are
displayed or not."

If it's B:
- When do the messages finally, permenantly dissapear? Ever?
- is your statement "The deleted messages should not be displayed." based on
some standard, or is that just your (very reasonable) expectation?

These look like two different 'bugs' to me. One for messages dissapearing and
reappearing (definitely wrong), and one for the interface for deleted messages
(conceivably an enhancement).
I have definitely seen A). Now I think I'm mostly seeing B).

The messages finally(!) disappear, I think, when I compact the inbox.

My reason for expecting that deleted messages should be invisible by default is
that it's what Mozilla MailNews predecessors used to do.

I don't know what Outlook or Outlook Express does, having never run it in my
life. There may or may not be a "standard".

My bug is really just about one issue: messages that are "marked deleted" ought
to be invisible (but visible if I tell MailNews/Thunderbird I want to view
deleted messages).

It could, on the other hand, be an RFE.
> The messages finally(!) disappear, I think, when I compact the inbox.

Could you confirm that? Thanks. I don't have IMAP, and can't confirm the bug,
but I'll post a request for someone else to do it.

I´ve tested with an IMAP account at myrealbox.com, my window layout is |-
theme is classic, I selected a mail in the uper right window, it was shown in
the lower right window, I clicked the delete button, and it was deleted in both
windows, replaced by the next mail. Repeated this with another mail.
Going to another folder took some time, returning to the inbox the mail still
didn´t reappear. I looked into the trash, and they have been moved over there.
Hermann,

What happens when you switch the "delete mode" to "mark as deleted"? I'm getting
excellent behavior using the "move to Trash" delete mode (it just works).

This bug has had no comments for a long time. Statistically, we have found that
bug reports that have not been confirmed by a second user after three months are
highly unlikely to be the source of a fix to the code.

While your input is very important to us, our resources are limited and so we
are asking for your help in focussing our efforts. If you can still reproduce
this problem in the latest version of the product (see below for how to obtain a

you still believe we should implement it, please visit the URL of this bug
(given at the top of this mail) and add a comment to that effect, giving more
reproduction information if you have it.

If it is not a problem any longer, you need take no action. If this bug is not
changed in any way in the next two weeks, it will be automatically resolved.

This issue has just been assigned CVE-2003-1265. It's described in detail here:
http://archives.neohapsis.com/archives/bugtraq/2002-12/0277.html

I'm re-opening this as it's existed for a very long time and is still not fixed.

Could you confirm this ? Get a regression timeframe ?

This RFE would be a duplicate to bug 190974 (or another similar bug).

|This CVE Identifier has "Candidate" status [...]|.
Anyway, it has nothing to do with the current bug report:
please, file a separate bug, if you think it's worth it and there isn't one already.

Given that I haven't looked at this issue for 4.5 years I think I will consider it closed. I haven't seen this in TB 2 - but that's because I haven't had an IMAP server in ages.

You may close this if you like.
This "bug" is still there, but it's not a bug. If you do not want mails marked as deleted showing up in the UI, just set the mode to "remove it immediately". (That will remove it from the *view* immediately.
