Details

User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.0; en-US; rv:1.3; MultiZilla v1.3.1.2) Gecko/20030312
Build Identifier: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.0; en-US; rv:1.3) Gecko/20030312

All messages written by Mozilla mail that have a signature prepend the signature
with "--". This, however, can easily be put into the signature file instead if
it is wanted, or replaced with something else. Right now, if one does not want
"--" to be prepended to the signature, they have to manually delete it on every
message. Rather cumbersome.

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Create a signature file.
2. Append message with signature.
Actual Results:
"--" appears before signature.

eg:
--
__________
Colin Snover

Expected Results:
NOT prepended "--".

eg:
__________
Colin Snover

Perhaps have a UI enable/disable if this "feature" is not wanted to be removed.

Who says? Works fine without it with "the other guy"
"Who says?"

The standards :) See
http://www.ietf.org/internet-drafts/draft-ietf-usefor-article-09.txt

In particular, within section 4.3.2:
A "personal signature" is a short closing text automatically added to
the end of articles by posting agents, identifying the poster and
giving his network addresses, etc. Whenever a poster or posting agent
appends such a signature to an article, it MUST be preceded with a
delimiter line containing (only) two hyphens (US-ASCII 45) followed
by one SP (US-ASCII 32). The signature is considered to extend from
the last occurrence of that delimiter up to the end of the article
(or up to the end of the part in the case of a multipart MIME body).
Followup agents, when incorporating quoted text from a precursor,
Ought Not to include the signature in the quotation. Posting agents
Ought to discourage (at least with a warning) signatures of excessive
length (4 lines is a commonly accepted limit).
That is a draft. Not finalized.

The usefor draft is very near to the final thing, and the parts still up for
discussion are clearly marked. Most of it is a done deal. The signature
delimiter itself has been around since before the usefor drafts.

The status of the draft spec aside, this issue has already been decided.
