User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 10.0; Win64; x64; rv:144.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/144.0

Steps to reproduce:

When I use, create, or rename a folder in my inbox, then move an email into it, the email doesn't display in the sub folder. (it says no message found). All filters are off. Across the top of the open sub folder, it says the name of the sub folder in bold, and says there are "2 messages". So, the messages were moved, but I can't see them.

Actual results:

If I named the folder using parentheses, for example: Mountain View (Benjy), those two parentheses cause the folder to not display contents. If I removed the ( ) from the name, all works well. I went back and removed the parentheses from several folder names - the emails displayed normally.

Expected results:

I would think using parentheses in a folder name would have no such effect.

Summary: Report a bug in Thunderbird Folders → parentesis in folder name causes the folder content not to show

Testing in 128.14.0esr
In 'Local Folders' account

  • Create a series of folders and subfolders and place emails in each folder.
  • TEST > Local test > Local test two > Local test three
  • Rename 'Local test two' as 'Local test [two]'

Actual Result and Expected:
All folders are correctly named and their email contents are visible.
Check profile folders - mbox and index files and .sbd folder renamed correctly.

Testing in beta 145.0b4

  • Copied everything over to beta profile into 'Local Folders'
  • Do not need to rename as it should be identical.

Actual Result and Expected:
All folders are correctly named and their email contents are visible.
Check profile folders - mbox and index files and .sbd folder renamed correctly.

  • Additional check rename 'Local test' as 'Local test [one]'

Actual Result and Expected:
All folders are correctly named and their email contents are visible.
Check profile folders - mbox and index files and .sbd folder renamed correctly.

Result:
No problems with a 'Local Folders' account.

Testing in beta 145.0b4 on IMAP gmail folder

  • Folder called 'Online Orders'
  • Rename to 'Online [Orders]'

Actual REsults
Initially folder does not display emails.
Need to select another folder and reselect 'Online [Orders]' to force a synch
All emails become visible again.
Folder/Label correctly named on server.

I also renamed an Inbox subfolder as a test but still no issues.

Result:
I'm not able to reproduce as reported in either version.

Notes:

  • Windows 11 OS
  • Computer 'User Account login' not 'Microsoft account login'
  • Thunderbird NOT installed via 'Windows app store'
  • Thunderbird download from https://www.thunderbird.net/en-US/thunderbird/all/
  • Profile stored in default location: C://Users/User name/Appdata/Roaming/Thunderbird
  • Using View > Folders > All Folders (not Unified) - but I did check and all visible in Unified folders as well.

Do you have anything that is different to my set up as mentioned in the 'Notes' in previous comment?

Hi Anje!
The only difference I see may be significant - it looks like you used the [ ] symbols, and not parentheses ( ).

Hi Anje,
I can't see how to send a response, except to tap "save changes", below. This may have changed my email preferences - which I didn't want to do! Please keep me in the loop.

Thanks. I've just performed a rename using ( ) - still no problems.
Maybe this has something to do with length of pathname. Adding the parentheses increases the path name.

In Local Folders account
Please create a folder called 'Test' and put a couple of emails in it.
Then rename to say 'Test (me)' or 'Test [me]'

Also please perform a test on the 'Mountain View (Benjy)' folder - rename as 'M View (Benjy)'
Please report back on what happens when using brackets but on a much shorter name.

I'll try it this evening. Thanks, Anje!

Bugzilla [Test] Message sent here was displayed ok

Bugzilla (Test) Message sent here was not displayed, but it said that I had one.

M View (Benjy) Message sent here was not displayed, but it said that I had one.
