RESOLVED DUPLICATE of bug 92165

People

(Reporter: reg, Unassigned)

Details

User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 10.0; Win64; x64; rv:144.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/144.0

Steps to reproduce:

  1. Start Thunderbird
  2. In the left navigation pane, create a subfolder in any e-mail folder and name it"test"
  3. Right-click on the created sub-folder, select "Rename" context menu item and enter "Test" in "Rename Folder" dialog box and press OK

Actual results:

An error message will appear stating "A folder with that name already exists". Clearly renaming procedure is not case-sensitive and treats both "Test" and "test" as the same string, which makes it impossible to change the letter case in the folder names.

Expected results:

Renaming that involves only letter case changes should work without error messages, as the end user expects that letter case changes should be possible. Most end users are not programmers and:

  1. Are not aware of case-sensitive and case-insensitive string comparison intricacies. 2) Should not be expected to invent workarounds like renaming the folder into something else and then renaming it again with correct case (e.g. "test" -> "test1" -> "Test")
Component: Untriaged → Folder and Message Lists

*** This bug has been marked as a duplicate of bug 92165 ***

Please read my bug report carefully, I have figured this workaround myself and reported it in the bug report without any external help. As I have stated before, most end users are not programmers like me, so we can't expect them to use typical programmers' workarounds when using general-purpose software. Workaround is not a resolution of a bug, it is a workaround.
