User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 10.0; Win64; x64; rv:146.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/146.0
Steps to reproduce:
Using Thunderbird to download emails, read emails, answer emails. Nothing special.
Actual results:
Thunderbird is compressing folders, syncing 45.000 old emails from Google of the last 15++ years, syncing public holdiays for my country every few hours, ... and is unresponsible to me who is master chief of operation.
It starts folder compression just at start of program and that blocks email downloads as such folders are in use then. When trying to close TB, it first syncs 40.000 old emails on google which didn't have changed since years and that takes minutes until TB closes. It's faster to kill TB via taskmanager and restart it when I want to just work with it.
I already have set up the mail accounts to just touch emails of the last two monthes and I am using TB every day, so it should not touch so old emails.
Expected results:
download mails, display mails, let me answer mails very quick. The user must be in the foreground.
Doing these backround tasks like folder compressing only when it is idle, means not while downloading emails, not while I am working with Thunderbird. It has to stop all backround tasks which eats up performce when there is mail download in progress and user action is there.
Notes: My Thunderbird profile is already very old, migrated from version to version, I still keep mails there which are 20 years old, the profile is around 20..30 GB in size. It has 6 different mail accounts, some are pop/smtp, some are imap. Pop then, when I don't want my mails to be too long onto a provider mailserver. My profile has a lot of filter rules and sub folders, where emails automatically are sorted in by sender, topic, etc. This is to be able to find mails easier and this is to avoid that the main inbox folder or any subfolder reaches a maximum of 65535 mails which would mean that no emails can be downloaded anymore to this folder.
This behaviour I observe now since several monthes and as a Thunderbird user since the last ... 20 years currently I am really thinking to which other mailclient I should flew. (Until yet no good alternative found)

It is only you, and not other users in your company?
It is just the one gmail account that has this problem?
You tested in Troubleshoot Mode?

OT but there is no max limit of number of email per folder in Thunderbird, nor in gmail.
Re compact, it sounds like you'd like to turn of silent compact, and make it instead ask you when you reach the limit - see the settings.

I am long time home user of Thunderbird, since one of the earliest public releases. You may can't imagine that someone has such a big amount of emails, but that's the reality, specially because of some mailing lists and a lot of direct contacts concerning my hobbies and personal interests. The gmail account is not the main account, but that's the pop account provided by my internet provider. So this is the important one which needs to function, But syncing old google mails and compressing mail folders takes all ressources and while it compress folders it can not filter emails in there. And if it is the main inbox folder which currently is compressed it even can not download any email. Otherwise I still can confirm that 65555 emails in one folder is the maximum. I tried that and it's not possible to put more emails in one folder, it stops. And why Thunderbird needs to sync public holidays every day, several times a day? They are not changing after they have been decided by the government for years in advance.
