We've had HDR video on Windows in experimental condition in nightly for a while now, let's move it to release.

Priority: -- → P2
Depends on: 2030165

firefox-beta Uplift Approval Request

  • User impact if declined/Reason for urgency: HDR video on Windows is a top priority for Firefox 151.
  • Code covered by automated testing?: no
  • Fix verified in Nightly?: yes
  • Needs manual QE testing?: no
  • Steps to reproduce for manual QE testing: Manual testing has already been arranged for this feature.
  • Risk associated with taking this patch: medium
  • Explanation of risk level: This is the enablement pref flip for HDR video on Windows, there is a chance it may need to be rolled back or modified before end of beta as this is a new feature on this platform (macOS already has this feature for a few years).
  • String changes made/needed?: None
  • Is Android affected?: no

Release Note Request (optional, but appreciated)
[Why is this notable]: HDR video on Windows has been the most requested feature on MozillaConnect, and leadership have been very interested in getting this feature shipped.
[Affects Firefox for Android]: No
[Suggested wording]: High dynamic range video is now supported in Firefox on Windows 10 and 11 for HDR displays connected to AMD and NVIDIA GPUs (notably this excludes Intel+NVIDIA laptops for now), work is underway to enable this feature on more GPU vendors. To use this feature you must ensure that HDR mode is enabled for the relevant displays in Windows Settings - Display. HDR videos may appear brighter in Firefox than in other browsers, which will be improved in a future release, as well as optimizations for performance.
[Links (documentation, blog post, etc)]: Not sure how suitable this technical blog is for release notes, but the feature was originally announced in https://mozillagfx.wordpress.com/2026/01/16/experimental-high-dynamic-range-video-playback-on-windows-in-firefox-nightly-148/ - I can make a new post there announcing this launch if desired.

Thanks, added to the Fx151 beta release notes, please allow 30 minutes for the site to update.
Keeping the relnote-firefox flag as ? to keep it on the radar for inclusion in the final Fx151 release notes.

Removed the release note from Fx151 beta. Disabled for Fx151 via Bug 2039126.
The note is here to add when needed for Fx152 https://nucleus.mozilla.org/admin/rna/note/791666/change/
