As we plan to conduct internal and, eventually, public testing of an update to the tab context menu structure, we need to:

  • implement the updated structure in Nightly behind the pref (Figma).
  • create a new Nimbus feature and add it to the feature manifest so we can flip this update on / off via Nimbus, and eventually offer it in Labs, if it's successful in early testing.

Let me drop a note here once we are able to conduct a first-click test of the new structure, and make final touch-ups, so the ticket is ready to pick up.

@shtrom has pointed out that since new menu structure groups together tab grouping presents another opportunity to optimize menu length / cohesion:

The Simple Tab Groups extension https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/simple-tab-groups/ allows to create groups of tabs, that tends to be openable as one lot in a single window (unlike the Fx Tab groups, which allows multiple groups within the tab bar).
Of course, it adds its own context menus to move tabs to various groups which makes things.... messy (see screenshot): there's Add tab to group at the top, Move tab in the middle, and Move tab to group (from STG) at the bottom. If adding a more general Move Tab to, it may be worthwhile adding support for extensions to add entries to that submenu, to keep things sorted (:

If our approach tests positively, I think it makes sense to allow extensions to add entries to the Move Tab To... submenu.

It seems that the WebExtensions standard for adding context menu items differs a bit between Chrome and Firefox -- Chrome doesn't have the tab type, so I guess that means extensions can't put items in that menu? Given that tab is not standard, I think we'd have a better argument for adding a new type like tab_move that's Firefox-only if we're really happy with where we're going

There's some share link work in this menu going on by niklas and Jared that I believe is behind a pref so this will need coordinating with them about where this fits in with this new context menu behind a pref, see bug 2019778.
