Details

User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 10.0; Win64; x64; rv:153.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/153.0

Steps to reproduce:

  1. Have an IMAP folder named Junk (created by Seamonkey or Thunderbird, ages ago, that's where Thunderbird sends detected junk despite the fact that in configuration it says it should send it to "Spam" folder on account X@domain.com)

  2. Have an IMAP folder named Spam (server-side spam filter based on SpamAssassin)

Actual results:

Thunderbird shows 2 folders named "Spam"

When trying to rename to a correct name, edit box is present but the value is not editable.

The culprit is https://github.com/thunderbird/thunderbird-desktop/blob/main/mailnews/base/src/nsMsgDBFolder.cpp#L3122-L3130

Expected results:

Option a): Thunderbird follows names on IMAP server (preferred) instead of renaming them.

Option b): Thunderbird allows changing the display name in settings if it insists on changing it in the first place.

I don't mind having two junk folders. These are actually useful to train SpamAssassin. The fact that they are visually indistinguishable is the problem.

As a workaround, you can set mail.useLocalizedFolderNames to 'false`
