Ideally, one would have the option of Mozilla Mail openning up either to its
Start Page or directly to the Inbox.  However, this version keeps the Start Page
as an unavoidable default, which is mildly annoying.  This happens even after
unclicking the Start Page option through Preferences.

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Setting Mozilla Mail to automatically upload email seems to bypass the Start
Page.
2. Same with going through MailWasher, though I've had other, unrelated problems
on this front.
3.

Actual Results:  
1. No Start Page.
2. Ditto.

Expected Results:  
1. Offered an option of whether we want to use the Start Page feature or not,
regardless of how our other preferences are set.

Confirming.

I just marked bug 228254 because of a misunderstanding of what the 'Mail Start
Page' actually is - but the reporter wanted the same feature the reporter of
this bug is requesting

severity->enhancement, since this is a feature request

I also tweaked the summary a bit to include 'Account Central' which I believe to
be the correct name for what's being displayed upon opening MailNews - correct
me if I'm wrong.

Bug 66570 comment 20 mentions placing a checkbox on Account Central as a good
way to implement this, and also gives a succint distinction between 'Account
Central' (click on account in folderpane) and 'Start Page' (should appear in
message pane under message list).  The bug itself deals with the latter, also
called welcome page there.

the experienced user can add it manually.

It hasn't been stated here, but: Moz/Seamonkey/TB will start with the (default) Inbox selected if you automatically check mail on startup.

Not really; this is about startup behavior.  Bug 169888 is related.  See also bug 276906.
