As of 2026-09-25, ICU 79 is at release-candidate stage. Filing this to track updating our vendored ICU once the actual release happens.

cc'ing :anba, who I know has handled a lot of ICU updates in the past -- I'm sure you're aware of the upcoming release.

ICU 79.1 has been released.

Summary: Update ICU to release 79 → Update ICU to release 79.1

Looks like there is some hassle with the Vancouver time zone used in TB which gets its time zones via ICU (bug 1794029).

Google AI says: ICU / Library Issue: Older versions of the International Components for Unicode (ICU) library, bundled in software, operating systems, and runtimes (such as Node.js, Windows, Chrome, and various network consoles), may not yet map America/Vancouver to the new permanent UTC-07:00 offset, causing a 1-hour error (falsely dropping back to UTC-08:00).

Hi Barbara. America/Vancouver was updated in tzdata 2026b (bug 2034823). If you're using Windows, your Thunderbird version may not include bug 2082211 yet (it shipped with Firefox 159).

Updating ICU is not needed to correctly handle this year's changes to timezone rules in Canada.

Thanks. Also included in 153.6.0 ESR. Sorry about the noise.
