The function "Save Link Target As..." form the context menu does not work either.

Did it work after installation, or did it never work with this installation? Did you uninstall the previous installation, and install into a new folder? Do you use extensions, or had there been extensions installed in the previous installation?

This bug appeared after a week or so of mozilla use. I reinstalled, and everything worked fine for 3-4 days, then same thing happened.
Downloading just about anything does not work in the "1.4 Candidate 1" version of the browser. Prior to this version (1.3.x and 1.4.beta), downloads worked fine. I now have to use IE to download files and even to (reliably) save html.

It can't even save the current page in the browser File>Save Page As... There is no error message. The save function of the curent document in Composer does work. The version I use has been installed after uninstalling the previous one. I didn't installed any plugins. The settings form Edit>Preferences>Navigator>Downloads are setted to "Open the download manager".

try deleting the download.rdf file from your profile. (do this while mozilla is shut down.) If you download a lot, this file can get very large, and can cause problems. There is a known bug on this, though I can't find it.

The file downloads.rdf was not very big ~16kB. The issue couldn't been resolved by its deletion!

Well, two other people confirm the same thing is happening. Please clear your cache, then try downloading again. If that doesn't work, I will confirm the bug.

Stefan: could you try closing mozilla, deleting compreg.dat in the components/ directory of mozilla (it will be regenerated the next time you start) and seeing if downloading will work now? I have this nasty feeling the killer bug from 1.2b has come back.

After creating a new profile I got this error message, when I tried to download a file.

First I cleared the cache and run the tests. Neither the download manager, nor the "Save As..." function does work. Second I deleted the file compreg.dat. Nothing changed. Third I created a new profile and started Mozilla with it. The download manager couldn't be called via menu. When trying to download a file I got an error message for the first time. "C:\DOKUME~1\SIM\LOKALE~1\TEMP\gbmn3xot.exe could not be saved, because the source file could not be read. Try again later, or contact the server administrator <Ok>" The screenshot is in the attachments. The "Save As..." function does not work. I tried again later... but... ;)

One more thing to try. Try deleting as many files as you can out of that Temp directory. It may have gotten full. You can browse to it directly, or use the Disc Cleanup tool found under Accessories/System tools. Added qawanted keyword to try to get others to duplicate this.

The temp files have been deleted. Can't call the download manager, can't download any file, can't save any page. No change there! :(

I had the same thing occur with 1.4 RC3. My solution was to make a copy of compreg.dat after a successful install. Then, after this failure, I copied the original over the current compreg.dat. Like and idiot, I didn't do a diff. What I really really did, was make a copy of the whole mozilla directory after a succesful install and copied it to a backup directory. Then, after the failure, I did a dircmp -s [current] [backup], and only 3 files changed: components/netscape/gecko1.4/permdata.box, components/compreg.dat and chrome/chrome.rdf. So it was a process of elimination (not real brains!).

I can confirm this bug with 1.3 on linux RH8(using the XFT version). After using 1.3 for some time and successfully using the download manager (which is the best thing since sliced bread), I could no longer download. Clicking a link would cause the throbber to briefly animate and then nothing. I had downloaded 1.4RC?(version 1.4.0.2003052912 from the install.log) and, apart from losing my tab group at startup, I could download again. So I restarted with 1.3 and still no download joy. I then renamed compreg.dat compreg_dat.bak and restarted 1.3 again. Now I can download again. Unfortunately, I don't know specifically what compreg.dat buys you so I imagine I'll be up a crick at some point, but it's good to have a workaround until it works. I'll include my compreg.dat file. Hopefully it will be of some help...

I too had this problem with Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.4) Gecko/20030624. It just kind of happens out of the blue, although for me it was more like it took weeks to occur. This also happened on my laptop (similar browser and OS). On that I uninstalled and reinstalled Mozilla to get it working again. I just tried deleting compreg.dat while Mozilla was off. Reloaded it up, and it downloads like a charm again.

I have exactly the same problem. Mozilla 1.4 release, windows XP, some weeks of use and then downloads stopped working, either by context menu or by simple clicking. No download manager appeared. Shutdown Mozilla and deleted compreg.dat, and the problem has gone away for the moment. My corrupted compreg.dat has been attached in case it is useful. I don't know how to reproduce it (apart from wait a few weeks), but I think this should be a confirmed bug by now.

I get this problem every day now. Always when I have several instances of Mozilla opened, all of them with several/many tabs open. Then I have to bookmark the pages , shutdown and delete compreg.dat and begin all over again. Please fix this soon. Env. is 1.4 and W2000

I also get this on Windows XP, Mozilla 1.4. Everything worked great for about a month and then clicking on files failed to initiate a download. I realized that selecting "Download Manager" from the tools menu would not bring up the window. I did a clean install and everything worked fine for a few days but the problem has returned. I will try archiving a new compreg.dat for faster recoveries.
