User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux i686; en-US; rv:1.4) Gecko/20030617 Build Identifier: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux i686; en-US; rv:1.4) Gecko/20030617 1.4 rc2 said it needs the 1.4.2 beta java pluggin. Fine installed it and linked /usr/java/j2re1.4.2/plugin/i386/ns610-gcc32/libjavaplugin_oji.so topluggin directory (note the gcc32 in the path) because the other does not work (mozilla does not start). The pluggin is correctly found but each time I access a page with java applet, mozilla crash... Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1. Install the 1.4.2 beta pluggin as suggested in the release note 2. Try to run a java applet 3. Actual Results: Mozilla crash Expected Results: Run the java applet correctly
This seems relate to #209904 Pete, please take a look, thanks!

I'am on debian sid... But used the java RPM via alien. Note that the bug is different than 209904 because the pluggin starts OK. I see it in Help->about pluggin but the browser crash each time I load a page with an applet. I've been using/installing java jre since 0.9.6 and this is the first time I see this behavior. For me, it is not acceptable as many pages contains java applets...
I would like to add that the backdorn 1.4.1 gcc-3.2 compiled versions works. So the problem is the 1.4.2 beta from sun (used RPM version). So take care to make this fixed before 1.4.2. Additionnal note : the readme for java says to link the wrong version of pluggin...
Eric, Seems you need to file bug for JRE. Otherwise your request can not be addressed.
Well, I guess java non working for many people because of asome change in mozilla 1.4 (probably not just the compiler) will be bad publicity... Escpecially given the major chnage comming for 1.5. Besides, crashing the browser when java crash while they are in different process is rather bad IMHO.
OK. I found the culprit : the debian alien package. If I use debian alien to convert the SUN jre-1.4.2 rpm (j2re-1_4_2-beta-linux-i586.rpm.bin) to a debian package and install it, the resulting installation does not work. If i use the standalone installer (j2re-1_4_2-beta-linux-i586.bin), it works. Sorry folks. The bug in the release note on the PATH of the pluggin still holds but this is not important...
