User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.0; de-AT; rv:1.3) Gecko/20030312
Build Identifier: http://www.mozilla.org/releases/#1.4

when installing Mozilla 1.4 it craches when starting automatically after install
(and at anytime later). I used standard install configuration, and selected
Quick launch. It happens all times (when installing over existing 1.3 and also
after uninstalling 1.3 before)

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1. install Mozilla 1.4
2.
3.
Attached file XP crash report
Same here. On XP, I uninstalled 1.3, installed 1.4. The install seemed to
complete fine, but when mozilla.exe was launched at the end, there was a
crash. I renamed my profile directory, and rebooted. Tried to run mozilla --
again, a crash. Attached is the XP auto-generated crash report.
Please uninstall Mozilla and manually remove the Mozilla folder before you
resinstall Mozilla

why should this block Mozilla development ?

Something similar happens to me.
I'm on windows 98 se. I could install 1.4a, 1.4b,
and SR1,2 and 3 all right, but after installing 1.4final,
nothing happened (expected : browser starts), and when I manually
started mozilla, the same happened (i.e. nothing happened).

I did many tests
1) removing the mozilla folder manually, installed 1.4f, didn't work
2) re-installed mozilla1.4f directly, didn't work,
3) deleted mozilla folder, re-installed, didn't work,
4) used the Add/Remove control pannel, re-installed 1.4f, didn't work,
5) deleted mozilla folder, installed 1.3, 1.3 started, installed 1.4f over 1.3,
didn't start.

now I removed 1.4 (no point on keeping something that does nothing), and stick
with 1.3 (I reverted to 1.3 after each of the 1.4 branch releases, btw...
due to that "image data memleak" bug.)
forgot to mention in comment #4 :
when mozilla would be expected to launch, I don't even get any error message or
whatever, just plain nothing.

and I also tried to reboot, which didn't change anything.
seems to be a duplicate of 211141....for us win98 folks
Happens to me too.
I first tried to update from 1.3 final to 1.4rc1 and got the crash.
Reinstalling 1.3 final worked but it was complaining about a missing dll
(xpcom_compat.dll).
With 1.4 final, I'm trying again and I get the same crash.
I tried removing the old 1.3, wiped out the program files folder and the profile
(made a backup of course), but crash still happens.

System: WinXP (dual P3@500, 512 MB, 120 GB but I guess that's irrelevant here).
XP crash dialog info:
AppName: mozilla.exe AppVer: 1.4.20030.62408 ModName: xpcom.dll
ModVer: 1.4.20030.62408 Offset: 00040769

Note 1: I get the _exact_ same behavior on my laptop (Win2k, latest SP, etc.).
Note 2: Firebird 0.6 works perfectly right out of the box.
Note 3: I believe this is a dup of bug #211141 so I'll mirror my comment there too.
I finally manage to have 1.4 final working.
What I did was:
- remove the broken 1.4 (crashing at startup in xpcom.dll)
- thoroughly find all "*mozilla*" files or folders on my drive. Nothing
significant found there. The c:\program files\mozilla.org\Mozilla was still
there so I simply eradicated it.
- thoroughly scanned the registry for "mozilla" items.
--> Removed HCKU\Software\Mozilla (was there but empty)
--> Removed HKLM\FullCircle\TalkBack
--> Removed HKLM\SOFTWARE\Classes\MozillaXXX where XXX=GIF, HTML, JPEG, MNG,
PNG, XHTML, XML, XUL.
--> Removed HKLM\SOFTWARE\Classes\mozMapi

Then:
- installed the NetInstaller for 1.4 final. Mozilla worked just fine :-)
- removed netinstalled version and tried again with full 1.4 installer. Works
fine now.

My assumption is that the problem resides in the registry and the OS is
irrelevant (i.e. 98/2k/XP exhibit the same problem).
Hope this help.
On 98se, I tried the steps described in Comment #8
(i.e. remove whatever says "mozilla" in the registry,
remove the mozilla directory, install 1.4 and pray)

I ended up with the same result (that is, nothing.)
By the way, I have two accounts (my own, and default),
and mozilla usually asks me to choose a profile when it
starts after installing. After installing 1.4, that dialog
didn't pop up (and nothing else did, obviously.)
