User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.5a) Gecko/20030714 Mozilla Firebird/0.6 Build Identifier: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.5a) Gecko/20030714 Mozilla Firebird/0.6 At www.cdcovers.cc or for that matter any website I can't drag and drop any picture into a program call coverXP which prints cd covers. With Internet Explorer I can. Since I use coverXP a lot to print my cd covers very quickly, I am forced to use IE instead of Firebird. Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1. www.cdcovers.cc, pick any cover 2. start coverxp 3. drag any picture from www.cdcovers.cc onto cd cover template Actual Results: Error message: Format not recognized... Expected Results: It should have given windows a standard bitmap that can be dragged and dropped into the cd template. This is very important to me. I really like firebird, because it is really fast but this application is important to me and please find a way to fix it.

this is probably something specific to IE. I don't know how its implemented, but I don't see this being done in Mozilla since its certainly platform specific and nothing. --> enhancement --> NEW Recommend WONTFIX or extremely Future.

This applies to all drag and droping of images in Windows. You can not drag and drop any image into photoshop or the gimp, for example. Drag and drop of an image from mozilla to gimp under linux works fine however. Windows users need this functionality to. Recommend Severity--> Normal

I can reproduce this in two different ways. I have JASC paint-shop-pro 6 and mspaint running and I am testing by dragging the firefox start and google logo images from the firefox start page. One of two things will happen - either: 1. Dragging an image to paint shop pro works and dragging to mspaint gives an error "C:\Docume~1\PaulHi~\Locals~1\Temp\google.gif was not found". In this scenario, firefox does not create the file google.gif in my temp folder. 2. Dragging an image to paint ship pro fails with the error "file format cannot be recognised" but it does create a file "google.gif" in the temp folder. Mspaint fails with the same file not found error as above, but in this scenario, the file is created in the temp folder where mspaint reports it can't find it. However, I can't predict which of the above two situations will occur for any particular drag - even if you don't reload the page sometimes draging will fail with the first error described above and sometimes with the second (note: I am cleaning the temp folder between each test). Retested on release version 1.0 and trunk build: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.8a6) Gecko/20041219 Firefox/1.0+ note: Regarding comment #1 above, this is nothing to do with special features in IE - dragging images is a feature of the standard windows API drag/drop implementation.

I have just retested in Gran Paradiso Alpha 5, and the situation has improved slightly in that now the cursor changes to an invalid drop target on mspaint / photoshop rather than allowing the drop then producing an error message. I don't know if this is because of changes in Firefox or because I am now testing on vista instead of XP. Despite this being an improvement, it still means Firefox is lacking functionality offered by IE.

bug 494989 fixes dragging kNativeImageMime which can be handled by mspaint but 484667 fixes creation of temp files which some programs need.
