Steps to reproduce: 1. Drag and drop a *.xpi-file on the Thunderbird main-window. Result: Nothing happens. Expected result: Ask the user whether he/she wants to install the extension. This works in Seamonkey and Firebird. (Tested with Thunderbird 0.1 and WinXP SP1)

This bug is more narrow thas it should be. Firefox basically lets you throw an extension at it a number of ways to install it. 1) You should be able to drag the extension to the thunderbird icon on the desktop to start the installation. 2) You should be able to start an installation from the terminal by typing thunderbird name_of_extension-tb.xpi. (handy for extension/theme developement) 3) dragging the extension over the main window I'm 99% sure this bug applies to all architectures, not Just Windows. Though if Thunderbird implements an installation mechanism ala FF3, the importance of these missing bugs is much less.

(was filed NEW) I wonder if we really want this behavior

Hmm, I think that behaviour is just because Firefox handles any kind of link dragged into it... not necessarily a behaviour they specifically engineered for. Thunderbird handles drag & drop into the add-ons manager and I'm pretty comfortable with only having that. I'm not sure if this is WONTFIX

I'm not sure if this is WONTFIX ditto. not only that, if we have to hack to make it work, or it works in one part of the pane and not another, then we make for future headaches.
