The Email Address Collection does not work as indicated in the help. In fact,
only addresses of *sent* messages can be collected. Test this in
Edit Preferences Mail & Newsgroup Addressing
Mail & Newsgroups Preferences - Addressing
The help says there should be an option "incoming mail messages":
Addressing preferences allow you to control the settings for Mozilla Mail &
Newsgroups address books ...
By default, email addresses contained in outgoing messages are stored as soon as
you click Send. If you choose "Incoming Mail Messages," Mail & Newsgroups stores
the sender's address in each message as soon as you open it.
By the way, if this feature starts working, then *junk* should be excluded from
the address collection. I also suggest an option to collect only addresses from
mails that contain the user in the To: field only.
Reproducible: Always
Steps to Reproduce:
1. Go to Edit Preferences
2. See Mail & Newsgroup Addressing
3. Look for the "Incoming mails" option
Actual Results:
The option is not present as indicated in the help.
It's been removed. See bug 175503 comment 1 for how to use it via a hidden pref
The help file should probably be rewritten to reflect the current functionality.
