I would like to have an option that bloomba mail client 
(http://www.bloomba.com/download.php) also has:

Threads but then the root is the newest, then sorting is also much easier to do 
(see bug #20385). And you don't have to expand a thread to read the newest, you 
can directly read the newest and if you want to reread an older one you can 
expand it.
