What I am getting as a normal user is: otto@linux:~> /opt/thunderbird/thunderbird Xlib: connection to ":0.0" refused by server Xlib: XDM authorization key matches an existing client! (thunderbird-bin:10267): Gtk-WARNING **: cannot open display: otto@linux:~> No Xlib problems starting other programs like /opt/firefox/firefox.

Whilst I don't see the "can't open display" message I do see Thunderbird failing to start/display anything. This happened in a previous build and dissapeared but seems to be back. Running strace over the application I see the following: execve("./thunderbird", ["./thunderbird"], [/* 31 vars */]) = 0 uname({sys="Linux", node="localhost.localdomain", ...}) = 0 brk(0) = 0x835b000 I wonder if this is a problem unique to the packaged builds. Folks I talk to that build thunderbird on their own don't see this....

cc'ing Benjamin. This new problem with packaged linux bits showed up right after the locale changs. Benjamin it seems like folks who make builds themselves are able to run just fine. But folks that use the packaged builds (which are made by building in mozilla\mail\installer\Makefile.in) aren't able to launch the app...

I just trashed the toolkit folder on the nightly build machine again just in case that was the problem.

Scott, we have a problem ;) I use this script (make -C mail/installer), and I can use packaged build without problem. Maybe because I am using thunderbird directory found in /mozilla/dist/ and not the tar.gz file ?

either that or the nightly build machine just needed someone to blow away the toolkit directory which I just did. We'll find out in the morning.

I'm having something similar to this. I don't know if I should start a new bug report or not. Was this ever fixed? I can reproduce most of the time. Makes ure you have two profiles, and are starting up with the "-p" option. Mine is on Windows XP though. version 1.0.2 (20050317). I haven't bothered to report this because I figured someone else would. But, since it's been happening since way back, probably even before 0.7, and still hasn't been fixed, here goes... 1. start mozilla with "-p" 2. click the "Start Thunderbird" as quickly as you can. Note that if you leave that window sit for a couple of seconds, no less than say 1.5 seconds, then thunderbird will start just fine. Try the two steps above a few times until you can get it. Under windows, it starts up, but as a background process with no window. So, a person may think that it didn't start at all, even though it really did. Once that happens, you can't start anymore thunderbird instances until you kill the first one, because they all start in the background.

That could be a little misleading. I'm not certain that you require two profiles. Perhaps just starting with the "-p" option would be enough.

Shoot, I just thought of something else. If this is the same bug as mine, I could have an explanation of why it works as root and not a normal user under linux. As root, you can run 100% cpu without interruption. As a user, your processes have to stop for other more important things. So, let's say that mozilla thunderbird is using threads during startup. Some are loading libraries, and others are doing other things. Perhaps a certain library is required to be completely loaded before a certain function call. If that library is not loaded, it just hangs when it tries to make a method call that's not completely ready. That's just a wild theory, but hey, you never know! ;)

Whatever this was, before or after any of the times it seems to have changed identity, I don't think this bug report is useful anymore.
