I am not sure if there is a hard and fast convention, but Thunderbird displays
the opposite caret for sort order windows apps such as OE6. The OE6 method makes
sense to me since a descending sort (largest first) displays with the wide part
of the triangle at the top. This is a visual clue that the larger things are
higher in the list than the smaller things (the point of the triangle).

I vote for this being a bug as well. Thunderbird has the nomenclature right
(the "View->Sort By" menu correctly shows "Ascending" when the sorting is A->Z
or older->newer, and "Descending" when the reverse is true), but the arrow
should be pointing "up" when it's in ascending order and "down" for descending
order. At the moment (v0.5 20040207), the arrow is pointing the opposite
direction in both cases.
