Bug 222796 is about "Standard extensions" By default, we can have View Source open a text/plain helper application (bug 172817), then we can outsource View Source to an extension available for people that don't have a good text/plain helper application to choose from. This will make Firebird more lightweight for the user who doesn't need View Source and is perfectly happy with the source code being loaded in notepad or what have you. When building "Browser", the .xpi for the extensions will be generated, but will be provided in a seperate directory on FTP and linked to from the page listing all the extensions that Mozilla.org maintains (bug 232845).

I use Notepad to edit but Firebird to View Source and this would be very inconvenient

while I don't agree, necessarily, at all, I don't see this as fundamentally flawed enough to not get a module peer decision on it My own thoughts on this is that we're not trying to create a "lite" browser, and the enhancements in view source are substantial enough, and lightweight enough, to justify inclusion. There's so much debate on how to find/spawn a "default" editor on non-win32 platforms that this isn't practical, but I'd rather pch weigh in here.

I'd like to mention that making it a Mozilla.org maintained extension would not mean View Source would be removed from Firebird. Mozilla.org would still maintain it, and it would not be made into a 3rd party extension. It'd just mean people would have the choice not to install it if they didn't want it if using an installer that downloaded the XPI packages one-by-one from the web.
Summary: Make View Source an Extension → Make View Source a Mozilla.org maintained Extension (Bundle)
this is not going to happen, view source is important enough to enough users to not waste time making this an installer option.
