233978 - "Download Manager" cumbersome and slow

The "Download Manager" in Firefox is not only slow to appear AND to go away
(yes, I installed the patch, which helped but not enough), it also interferes
with other windows while it is present. It is too slow in part due to delays
when it apears and disappears, and too much of a pain to use because other
things are held in supsension while it is doing those things.

Worse: turning it off removes any kind of window at all... you do not even get
the kind of (fast and informative) window that was used in 0.7.

Enable Download Manager if you want, but include the ability to go back to the
0.7 way of downloads as an option, so people can continue to still have some
kind of preformance.

Steps to Reproduce:
1. To reproduce, first you find a member of the opposite sex. Then,
2. engage in some conversation. When you have warmed up a little,
3. take him/her home with you. There are further steps, to be enumerated later.

Actual Results:  
Haven't gotten her home yet.

Expected Results:  
Expected results: reproduction. Or, rather, a reasonable facsimile thereof.

The download manager is just too slow and cumbersone. The method used in 0.7 was
superior to this implementation.

I do a lot of downloading, and switching among windows when I am waiting for
something to download. Your Download Manager makes a mess of the whole thing.

Performance issues shouldn't lead to the introduction of prefs if performance is
the real problem.  Anyway, this is a dup of bug 233122.
