I think that there should be a pref to change keyboard shortcuts, so that people
changing operating systems or browsers can set keyboard shorts to a certain
class, like unix emacs windows...

duping to the seamonkey bug, this wouldn't be implemented in Firefox anyway as a
core feature, but as an extension maybe, but there's a number of bugs blocking
that bug anyway, once that's fixed, someone could convert than patch to an
extension.
