I was disappointed to see the Downloads Sidebar disappear from Firefox 0.8.
This was a nice feature that I would like to see return, at least as an option
or an extension.
It never quite worked right, but I was confident a little time would fix all the
glitches. Worked especially well with the sidebar auto-hide extension from Optimoz.

I had already looked at bug 229227, and do not believe they are the same. That
bug was written when the Linux and Windows versions still had the download
sidebar, and the complaint was that it wasn't available specifically in OSX.
Now the Sidebar is gone completely (presumably from all platforms?), and this
request is to bring it back as an option (on all platforms, including OSX).
I think 229227 is related to the peculiarities of the development of the OSX
version--why they don't keep them the same across platforms is beyond me, and
not related to this bug.
If you still feel this should be merged with 229227, please feel free.

If someone wants to write an extension, sure, but this won't be a core feature.

Why was this core feature removed in the first place? It certainly goes along
with the mentality of the tabbed browser not to have a bunch of extra windows
floating all over the place. And the sidebar makes much more sense than
displaying downloads in their own tab as Opera does. Was there some reason or
debate about removing it?

Could this BUG be reopened, then still I think CTR+J should open the Downloads like CTR+H and CTR+B in the Sidebar instead of a new Page (about:downloads) were the Download items don't even look like there are on the right place !
It would make also the dropdown menu which has recently landed in Nightly more attractive/filled.
And you could easily watch the download progress while browsing other sites.
@comment #4 there are some ADDONs, one of them is https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/omnisidebar/,
but this will stop working with version 57 and yes I am sure there will also some other which will work after November, but I do not want to install for everything a Addon.
BUG 75359 is still open but only for Seamonkey !

Another vote from me to have this bug re-opened. Currently, users that like to use the Sidebar must also use the Library to access their downloads. If a Downloads section could be added to the Sidebar, then everything could be easily accessed there. As mosscap said in the reply above mine, it makes no sense to have CTRL+H and CTRL+B open the sidebar, then have CTRL+J open a new window. Just seems clunky that way.
