People
(Reporter: s.janotta, Assigned: mscott)
Details
User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; de-DE; rv:1.6) Gecko/20040206 Firefox/0.8
Build Identifier: Mozilla Thunderbird 0.5 (20040207)
Using SSL encryption while sending through SMTP server with default SMTP/SSL
port (465) works fine with Thunderbird.
Using SSL encryption while sending through SMTP server which uses non-default
port (25) for SSL communication (WEB.DE) fails.
The same combination (SMTP/SSL over port 25) works fine with News/Email in
Mozilla 1.5
The error report says, the server could not be contacted or doesn't accept SSL
connections.
It seems to me that either the wrong server or the wrong port is used.
This error occurs no matter how many SMTP servers are defined (i.e. also with
only one)
Reproducible: Always
Steps to Reproduce:
Setup SMTP server as normal. Enable SSL secured connection as allways. Change
port to 25.
Actual Results:
Software hangs for a while in sending... dialog, then displays error message
saying that the connection to the SMTP server could not be established. The
message is not sent.
Expected Results:
Thunderbird should connect to SMTP server over specified port (25) and send the
message over a SSL connection

I can confirm this bug on Build ID: version 0.8 (20040913)
Unfortunatly I cannot provide any more insight into the cause. This is a
serious issue now as Sympatico service (in Canada) now requires SSL on port 25
for smtp settings.

After more searching I believe this is a dupe of bug 219840 which also makes
reference to bug 230519 and bug 185662
The explanations in those bugs are beyond me (I don't know much about TLS,
STARTTLS or SSL) but I tried TLS instead of SSL and I was able to send fine...
problem fixed.
The problem for me and probably for everyone else with average and lower
computer skills (the majority or computer users and the exact audience
Thunderbird must aim for) is that my ISP gives settings for Outlook Express and
if I want to use a better alternative it is up me to find equivalent settings in
the other program. In this case the settings stated "Click Advanced, and under
Server Port Numbers, confirm that the Outgoing mail (SMTP) is set to 25 and then
select This server requires a secure connection (SSL)". As I discovered this
will not work.
I don't know what to suggest as a solution, this should be discussed, but I do
believe that this is blocking 1.0
