The colour difference between stars and 'non-stars' is not distinctive enough
for colour-deficient users. I am only a bit colour-blind, and I find it quite
hard to distinguish the different ratings.

Colour-deficient users aside, the distinction is just hard to see for people
with good vision (especially people with sunlight shining onto their monitors)

I'm thinking the gray star might need to be darker, as opposed to just an
black/white version of the color..

I'd go for making the stars light/dark shades of the same colour. Not sure if it
would look better with the dark part for the stars that count or the "off" stars.

Another option would be outline/filled stars, but then you'd have to change the
type of star to one that would look as an outline.

Taking this, as the rating stars are being removed in the new update-beta site.
In favor of very verbose text. 4.2 of 5 with a star beside it. :-)
