select news server in tree view on left
press [Get Msgs]
each group gets msg count filled in w/ total msgs in group
e.g. b.administrivia (3010)
after clicking on newsgroup, count is reset to unread msgs
e.g. b.administrivia (1)
in Mozilla 1.6 on Linux, this worked properly (that is, the
unread count was shown after [Get Msgs])
