However, using this method means it is impossible to load the resulting page into a new tab or window. The remedy for this would be to support key modifiers with this action, for example Alt + Drag opens the resulting page in a new tab. Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1.Drag some text into the search bar 2.Resulting page is loaded into active tab regardless of user's preference

The functions added in bug 246719 could be helpful. The address bar and search bar are weird because they use Alt for "new tab" while everything else uses Ctrl.

I use Tabbed Browser v1.2.4. The way I have this set up enable me to drag text from a page to the url bar, and it opens up in a new tab. Windows ME. So I don't see this problem.

Problem with this is Ctrl+Drag means "Copy" so this is a little wrong-ish. Assuming this could be done sanely, Future for now.

Comment #3 points at one potential problem, and the other potential problem is the discoverability of this feature. Further, implementing this feature would continue to break down the tab-owning-location-bar structure that we would like users to understand.
