If you click on an extension XPI from an un-white-listed domain the resulting "popup" says "To protect your computer, Firefox prevented this site from installing themes". If you install the same extension from an InstallTrigger, the "popup" correctly refers to it as an extension. Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.7) Gecko/20040708 Firefox/0.9.0+

just show the software warning for all install types. eventually themes will be exempt from this.
