Hotmail is a very popular service and unlike most webmail services, it
implemented a httpmail server for *free account* users to access their mails
using OE. This whole things works sort of like IMAP. Although this is a
proprietary protocol, it has been partially documented
(http://jhttpmail.sourceforge.net/httpmail.html) and there are several
opensource implementation of this.
I understand that this is better implemented as an extension, however, due to
its complexity (new mail protocol) and the fact that currently TB is receiving
less public attention than FX (less potential extensions devs) and lastly the
fact that that various webmail proxy programs have different limitations and
nagative sides (hotpopper: shareware, windows only; MrPostman: somewhat
inefficient due to Java; freemail.fm and other relay services: their storage
will be too small for hotmail after the hotmail storage upgrade due this coming
fall (250mb for free users) and they are not quite transparent. Lastly, this is
the only things that prevents me and I bet quite a few users from using TB and
this is a feature that has been requested many times on the forum.
So, I hope you would consider these reasons and consider implementing this
feature.
