The modal alert dialogs informing of a failed connection or failed finding of a
host are really annoying in 4.x, and it seems we're doing the same thing in
Mozilla. Can we not point to a webpage instead?

I'll do the design of the webpage if someone is willing to add the back end
stuff to load it.
should not be that difficult... the trickier part is doing it correctly. We need
to throw the content of this "failed page" without updating the location bar.

Updating platform/OS to all.

NOTE: If it's feasible, let this be an option (have a "I know so don't ever show
it to me again") so that it doesn't get too annoying like ns4.7.5. This would be
particularly useful for people with dialup connections as the most likely cause
of this error would be that you're not connected to the internet - you don't
need an alert to tell you that.

Could the errors land in the sidebar?

I think they should not land in the sidebar as:

- there would direct connection between the error cause and the result display
for the enduser
- the sidebar can be hidden or closed

The content area would be the best place to show a failed page load in plain
language terms.
Original side bar spec had support for some sort of flashing notification, and
we're mostly talking about non fatal errors, including images and scripts and
other inline objects that fail to load.
I think this bug is a duplicate of bug 28586, "[RFE] Should use error page, not
dialog, for inaccessible pages". If loading an image from a non-existent
website still results in an alert, bug 58749 should be reopened to cover that
case.
