Seems liks you have to be registred to view these popups?
Severity: blocker → critical
(In reply to comment #1) > Seems liks you have to be registred to view these popups? No, you don't have to be registered to view these pop ups. Remove the pop-up blocker and everything works well. As for the nitwitt who changed it from blocked to critical; it is a block, the whole bloody browser crashes! you can't get any more severe than when the whole bloody browser crashes because of a screwed up features! yes, so I would called it "blocked" (directed at mconnor@steelgryphon.com who changed the status)
Severity: critical → blocker

Mozilla/5.0 (Macintosh; U; PPC Mac OS X Mach-O; rv:1.7.3) Gecko/20040911 Firefox/0.10 Mac OS X 10.2.8 I noticed the same crash while reading my mail at webmail.spamcop.net. At first I couldn't understand, but then I realized it happened whenever I tried to compose a mail or reply - both actions will open a new window. It used to work a few weeks ago using Seamonkey trunk I'm sure. I'm posting the offending code in a minute. Talkback ID's : TB812643Q TB813866G TB813896Y (In reply to comment #2) > As for the nitwitt who changed it from blocked to critical; it is a block, the > whole bloody browser crashes! you can't get any more severe than when the whole > bloody browser crashes because of a screwed up features! yes, so I would called > it "blocked" (directed at mconnor@steelgryphon.com who changed the status) Reporter, 'blocked' status is used for bugs that block development and that should be immediately looked after. Most often bugs that prevent compilation, nightly builds that don't even start, etc ... See <http://bugzilla.mozilla.org/bug_status.html#severity> I'm sure it's very critical to you and a lot of other people (including me), but it doesn't block all of them. Maybe only on Macs or something. Even for you and me, it doesn't crash all the time. Let's hope that the bug can get squashed soon.
Severity: blocker → critical
Status: UNCONFIRMED → NEW
Ever confirmed: true
The last crash I had (TB813896Y) was called by this code : <a href="javascript:open_compose_win('thismailbox=INBOX');" onmouseout="window.status='';" onmouseover="window.status='Compose'; return true;" class="menuitem" accesskey="C"> The function open_compose_win() should be loaded from <http://webmail.spamcop.net/horde/services/javascript.php?file=open_compose_win.js&amp;app=imp> but I can't find anything there (refere-check ?). I'm still looking. Note that it doesn't seem to crash the Seamonkey trunk. I tried both with and without the popup-blocker, but that didn't create a problem (both windows opened fine). Mozilla/5.0 (Macintosh; U; PPC Mac OS X Mach-O; en-US; rv:1.8a4) Gecko/20040911
Hmmm. I get the error in Firefox 0.10 both with and without the popup-blocker.

(In reply to comment #12) > dup of Bug 255372? I think so, I got the same stacktrace on <http://www.vsen.tv/gallery3/folderview.asp?bid=2&folder=WCG+2004+Brasil>, which was mentioned in bug 255372 comment 8. I'll now try all the other urls in that bug to see if all of them generate the same stacktrace.
Tried deleting the profile, deleted the firefox.app, re-downloaded it again and installed it, same problem. yeap, for the previous person, the browser does crash both with popup blocker disabled and enabled :-( I've tried the nightly builds as well, based on the 1.8a4 line, and the browser crashes, so there is something that has been introduced recently that has balls'ed up the browser.

Went away? Well, I lied. It's not consistent but it does happen most of the time. Still repro on linux on ... hey folks, definately not a MAC-only issue. for 1 week now or so, can't tell exactly when it started, i get this popup-crashes -whole FF issue as well :-( things i see are the following: - seems not to happen with a fresh nightly branch install without extensions, clean new profile (well bookmarks, signons, history copied back) - i use 5 exts: sort bookmarks, googlebar, autocopy, statusbarclock, proxybutton - i can reproduce it easily going to www.nvidia.com -> download drivers -> selecting graphics driver for GeForce and TNT2 -> WinXP/2000 -> GO, then on the next page select one source to download -> popup window SHOULD occure but crashes whole FF when the issue is present. i really can't narrow it down to anything, also tried disabling popup blocker, no use. what "seems" to help is clearing the cache and/or cookies under options/privacy. i'll try to investigate a bit more under windows and keep you posted. anyways i'd surely call this one blocking.... regards, Thorsten

allright, i think i can definately confirm that this is not a MAC issue. it is definately present on WIN machines, though i still can't say what causes it or when it starts happening. right now i am on 27_09_2004 branch nightly build, with NO extensions, qute theme installed and a few engines added to searchbar. nothing else changed. so far the popups work....will try around the whole day with this config, and see if it starts happening. regards

Gavin, if you're setting this bug to all/all, bug 255372 should probably be a dup. Some good data/stack traces in that bug as well.
Ah, might as well dupe to that one. I should have seen that earlier. *** This bug has been marked as a duplicate of 255372 ***

Well, I've just grabbed: Mozilla/5.0 (Macintosh; U; PPC Mac OS X Mach-O; en-US; rv:1.7.3) Gecko/20040928 Firefox/0.10 And it seems that the crashing has stopped. The javascript problems have spontaneously stopped occuring. I'm a little lazy, but many one of the developers should go back through the recent submissions and find out what caused the crashing so that the submiter of code can be given a public flogging, and find out which piece of code corrected it, so that submitter can be given a keg ;-)

(Mozilla/5.0 (Macintosh; U; PPC Mac OS X Mach-O; en-US; rv:1.7.3) Gecko/20040928 Firefox/0.10 ; on Mac OS X 10.2.8) I tried all public urls in this bug abd bug 255372, but no crash anymore. I was so busy dodging these popups (I used to get them at my webmail interface), that I don't know when it was solved. I don't think it was more then 4 days ago, though, that the last crash I remember.
Still broken on linux ... Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux i686; en-US; rv:1.7.3) Gecko/20040929 Firefox/0.10 StumbleUpon/1.998
The problem persists with v0.10.1 running Mac 10.3.5, G4

Quick recap of information from bug 255372 (and some more): - This happens (consistently, for me and a few others) for every window.open() which specifies a non-empty featureset parameter that does not include "toolbar". Setting dom.disable_window_open_feature.toolbar to "true", thus forcing a toolbar, also prevents the crashes. - This behaviour started in the 20040907 nightly build. It was not there in the 20040906 build, and it's not on trunk builds. - The list of checkins done between these two builds is here: http://bonsai.mozilla.org/cvsquery.cgi?treeid=default&module=AviaryBranchTinderbox&branch=AVIARY_1_0_20040515_BRANCH&branchtype=match&dir=&file=&filetype=match&who=&whotype=match&sortby=Date&hours=2&date=explicit&mindate=2004-09-06+08%3A00%3A00&maxdate=2004-09-07+08%3A00%3A00&cvsroot=%2Fcvsroot (thankes, Johnny Stenback). Of these checkins, the most likely to be related is the patch checked in by Ben Goodger as a fix for bug 22183 (attachment 157917 [details] [diff] [review]). Specifically, note the following added lines in browsr.js, which make specific reference to the "toolbar" property: + if (document.documentElement.getAttribute("chromehidden").indexOf("toolbar") != -1) { + gURLBar.setAttribute("readonly", "true"); + gURLBar.setAttribute("enablehistory", "false"); + } + Also note that the the stack trace (comment #3) indicates the crash was in nsXULElement::SetAttribute(), called from the JS interpreter. This seems consistent with one of the setAttribute lines above leading to the crash (although I might be wrong here - I'm not really familiar with the code). However, attachment 157917 [details] [diff] [review], consisting only of JS, XUL, and CSS files, couldn't have been the root cause of this crash. It is more likely that it simply exposed (on OS X, under certain circumstances), an existing, cross-platoform, bug in the C++ code. This might very well be the same bug that bug 255372 (reported on an 20040803 Windows build) is talking about. I would very much want to try and comment out those two lines in browser.js in order to test my theory. However, I couldn't ind the file inside my installation. So I guess it's being somehow compiled into the executable. If anyone can somehow help me in testing this theory, I will be thankful.
Clarifying the last sentence of my previous comment: "this theory": The theory that those lines from browser.js caused the crash to appear. Not the theory that browser.js is compiled into the executable :-)
The browser js file is in your Firefox install directory, under the chrome directory. C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\chrome\ In that directory, there is browser.jar, which is a renamed zip file. That zip file has browser.js in it at: browser.jar\content\browser\browser.js C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\chrome\!browser.jar\content\browser\browser.js You can use that to test your theory.
Thanks, Gavin. The path was somewhat different for me (I'm on OS X, remember), but I managed to find the browser.jar and test my theory. I'm sorry to report that it failed. I was still crashing after commenting out those JS lines. To check whether I'm (once again) blaming the wrong patch, the next thing I'll try is a more aggressive methods of backing it out. I'll try swapping the entire browser.jar in the 20040908 build with the one from the 20040906 build. If that will help, I'll try narrowing down again. Wish me luck.
I replaced the browser.jar in 20040908 with the browser.jar from 20040906. Result: NO crash. Replaced only the browser.js file (rest of jar 20040908, browser.js from 20040906). Result: crash. Replaced only the browser.xul file (rest of jar 20040908, browser.xul from 20040906). Result: search bar looks broken; NO crash. So the problem is in browser.xul, not browser.js. Manually backed out the patch to bug 22183 (attachment 157917 [details] [diff] [review]) from the 20040908 browser.xul. Result: crash. So I was, again, blaming the wrong patch. The only other change made to browser.xul (and browser.js, and a bunch of other files) between 20040906 and 20040907 was a fix to bug 256201, bug 256682 and bug 253015 (attachment 157982 [details] [diff] [review]). Manually removed the <searchbar id="searchbar"/> tag that was added in this patch to browser.xul (I did not put back a bunch of lines which were removed). Result: No search bar, and NO Crash! So it's the search bar! (or actually something done to the search bar by attachment 157982 [details] [diff] [review]). So will just removing the search bar from a normal, recent build, work? Yes, it does! Removing the searchbar eliminates the crashes (even when my previous workaround is not applied). I would like to ask people which were able to reproduce this bug consistently to verify that removing the search bar indeed eliminates the crashes. I think that's currently the most I can do regarding this bug. If anyone has any idea which they want me to check out, I'll be happy to do so. However, please be quick - the machine I'm working on will only be available to me for the next two days (and then maybe again next Friday).
Given my more recent findings, I've changed my mind again, and I now believe that this is, in fact, the same issue as bug 255372. Please see my comment at bug 255372 comment 67. rather than marking this as duplicate again, I'll make it dependent on 255372. If someone feels this is wrong, please go ahead and make it a dupe. As always, sorry for the spam.
