Details
User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux i686; rv:1.7.3) Gecko/20040914 Firefox/0.10 Build Identifier: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux i686; rv:1.7.3) Gecko/20040914 Firefox/0.10 I've not been able to install search engines since just before 1.0PR (not sure which nightly). I am currently running 1.0PR. I had assumed that this was caused by bug 235600, but I ran FireFox with root permissions to install the Wikipedia and IMDB search engines. They would not install, install silently fails. I can't figure out how to run strace on firefox-bin instead of on the firefox shell script, or I'd have that info. I'm running slackware-current. Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1. Open FireFox as root 2. Attempt to install Wikipedia (or other) search plugin Actual Results: Plugin fails to install, with no error Expected Results: Installed the plugin

Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux i686; en-US; rv:1.7.8) Gecko/20050511 Firefox/1.0.4 Slackware 10.1, Linux kernel 2.6.11.7 Installed from mozilla.org's own GUI installer as root - this is the first time Firefox has been installed on this system. Attempting to add search engines from http://www.mozilla.org/products/firefox/central#central-engines by clicking the link results in a confirm dialogue box, but the selected engine is not added to the drop-down list in the search box. Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: - Click link to install search engine - Confirm selection by clicking OK

FreeBSD 5.4 Firefox 1.0.3 Could not use javascript to install search plugin either. Temp fix may be this: 1. Click the javascript link for desired plugin 2. Note the source link (ie http://mycroft.mozdev.org/plugins/wikipedia.src) 3. Type this link into browser 4. Accept downlond 5. Retype the source link into browser but with png or tif extension 6. Save image 7. Move both *.src and *.(image) to firefox/searchplugins dir I know most of you probably know this but it took me a while to figure it out and my help someone else in the same bout. Sure it would work the same in linux though I don't have a Linux box currently to try it out. Alot of steps, hope it gets fixed in next update.

In Firefox 1.5 Beta 2, I had a related problem: I tried to add Wikipedia using the normal Mozilla page for adding search engines; the "Wikipedia&Google" entry appeared UNDER the "Add Engines..." command, and then disappeared shortly thereafter. Attempting to add it again failed, but then when I quit Firefox and restarted it, the "Wikipedia&Google" entry appeared at the end of the normal list of search engines, and so far seems to be staying there.

One other thing that might help with diagnosis: when the "Wikipedia&Google" entry temporarily disappeared, an extra border appeared in the search engine menu, under "Add engines..."

AS the original reporter, I can say that not only has 1.5 beta 1 resolved this problem for me. Specifically, it allows installing search plugins per user, which may simply bypass the inability for even Firefox running as root to write to the global location, thus obscuring the problem. Regardless, it now WFM.
