In the new finger protocol the "e-mail" line should be a mail-to link

Perhaps it could also be possible to run the .plan text through the text2url
function so that URLs gets converted into clickable URLS.
Ex: if your do:
finger:johnc@idsoftware.com

Unfortunately there is not always an "email" line. The format of the response
is completely up to the server, and I don't think it would be a good idea to try
to guess at what format it's trying to use.
The automatic URL highlighting sounds like a good idea though, I'll look into
it.

How would it handle something like "johnc@idsoftware.com" within the finger
text? Would that be interpreted as an e-mail or finger address?

It could be pretty cool it if was a finger address.

I think the most logical thing to translate that to is a mailto: link. Email
addresses are often NOT usable as finger: URL's, because you need a server name,
not an MX entry in DNS.
As for the status on this one...
We need asynchronous text->html conversion to make this work. Currently only
synchronous conversion is available. valeski is working on the asynchronous
methods.

We could add "go to address as a finger address" to the context menu within
finger:* pages. Of course, then people will start complaining that there's
no "go to address as a finger address in a new window".

Moving to M16... I have this done but did not get it checked in in time for the
M15 tree closing. Will check in as soon as the tree opens for M16 work.
Target Milestone: M15 → M16

This can be implemented now with nsTXTToHTMLConv/nsITXTToHTMLConv, and changed
(easily) later if we use a different interface. Clearing dependency.
No longer depends on: 20212
