I have compose using HTML enabled. When I send a "this is a test" email, the
"Options-Format-Autodetect" is enabled, but when I send, it goes out as HTML
only (not even a text/plain version). As I haven't used formatting, I'd have
expected it to go out as text/plain?

In fact, wasn't there a "send both" option in Mozilla Mail? What I wanted to see
was when I composed a text-only mail, it'd go as text/plain, and if I used the
formatting options, then when I went to send to be prompted "shall I send text
only, html only, or text and html?"

Is there a missing option there?

Thanks! Other than that, so far I've found thunderbird to be gorgeous compared
with Mozilla Mail! :-)

This is Thunderbird 0.9 under Fedora Core 2.

Reproducible: Always
Steps to Reproduce:
1. compose
2. type in text with no formatting
3. send

Actual Results:
you get a text/html email

Expected Results:
you get a text/plain
The address book contains a setting for each entry regarding whether the
recipient "prefers plain" or "prefers HTML." If the latter is set for every
recipient of the message, HTML-composed mail always goes as HTML. If instead
the recipient "prefers plain," the message is always converted to plain text.

If the recipient's pref is "unknown," then a formatting-free message is always
converted to plain; and a message with formatting will be handled according to
the setting specified under Options|Composition|Send Options (that's where "Send
both" is located.)

If the recipient is not listed, it's handled as "prefers plain" rather than
"unknown" -- bug 257686.

Also, using the compose window's menu item Options|Format overrides all of
the above logic.

Spot on. Our LDAP server explicitly has "mozillausehtmlmail: TRUE" as an record
- so that was forcing the internal addresses I tried into HTML mode.

Sorry about that :-}
