When the Get Mail button is used it polls all email accounts whether or not those accounts are tagged for regular downloading. It should only poll those accounts selected for periodic downloading as is the case in OE. I'm using Thunderbird version 1.0 (20041206)
leventre: when you file Thunderbird bugs, please use "Thunderbird" as the product, not "Bugzilla", thank you. Bugzilla is not an email client, it's a bug-tracking system. This is the second one for you I've moved today.

Get New Mail for All Account will retrieve mail from each account for which the password is known. If you're storing the passwords for the accounts, delete the stored ones for the accounts you don't want queried. Alternately, you can create a second profile and set it up with the accounts that you only want to check occasionally. TB's profile handling is a little awkward -- there's no Choose Profile menu action, you need to exit and restart into the Profile Manager -- but it's an option.
Comment #3 makes no sense. How does one create an account with no password and not have Thunderbird ask for it each time? It not unusual to have one ore more outgoing-only email accounts. Thunderbird forces you to add a valid POP or IMAP server when you create a new account. When you click on the "Get Mail" button, it asks for a password. If I click cancel, the next time I click "get Mail" it asks for the password again. If I don't enter a valid password and click "OK" it does not work, it asks for a password again. How does one create outgoing email only accounts and be able to use the "Get Mail" button? You can't. That is a BUG. -- Paul
(In reply to comment #3) > Comment #3 makes no sense. You're right. > How does one create an account with no password and > not have Thunderbird ask for it each time? You don't check the "Save password" button the first time it asks. > When you click on the "Get Mail" button, it asks for a password. It does that only if you have that account selected. The button only gets mail for the current account (or newsgroup) if you simply click it. You need to drop down the button's menu to perform "Get New Messages for *All* Accounts" (or use the File menu or the shortcut).
Good clue, thank you Mike. OK, this is the fix. I use Global inbox for all my email accounts including the "dummy" accounts. I then filter mail to the right place. If the dummy accounts have their own folder instead of global inbox, the "Get Mail" doesn't try to download mail from them, only the email acocunts set up to use the global inbox. Yea! It would ne nice if it were a more elegant way to have dummy (outgoing only) email accounts in Thunderbird, but that certinaly isn't a bug. My sincere apologies for suggesting otherwise. Thanks for the fast response to confirm this isn't a bug. You guys are awesome! -- Paul
I still believe this is a bug that should be fixed. It is at least a serious deficiency in performance. I keep a full account listing of all my small business email accounts including the passwords. I don't have any dummy email accounts. In outlook express, the get mail button only downloads mail marked for downloading. This is very handy because I don't want to download all the email accounts. Now the Get Mail button is useless to me. I have to use the arrow and only download a specific account, if I want to check more often than the period I set. The Get Mail button in Thunderbird gets mail from all the accounts by default. Contrary to what was suggested, I don't have to select get all messages from the drop down list for this to occur. Using a different identity is not a practical answer. It seems to me the program should have a subroutine to check to see if the account is selected for periodic downloads. Then if someone wants to download from all accounts, they can select the down arrow and get all new messages.
(In reply to comment #6) > The Get Mail button in Thunderbird gets mail from all the accounts by default. No, it does not, and it never did. It gets mail from the account that is selected in the folder pane, or for the selected newsgroup or news account. > I still believe this is a bug that should be fixed. The program is not broken, insofar as it behaves as the programmers intended. I'm duping this bug to a general "allow customization of the Get Mail button" RFE. *** This bug has been marked as a duplicate of 301228 ***
