scrollbar disappeared after reducing the mail window's width

Reproduce steps:
1. launch thunderbird
2. select a mail folder (e.g. Inbox) to make sure there are enough mails in the
thread panel so a scrollbar appears on the right
3. reduce the window's length to 1/4 of the original
The scrollbar disappears after reducing the window's width.
Browser window has no such problem.

You mean "width" and not "length" here, I believe.
There is a minimum width applied to the panes. You'll notice as the width is
decreased, the columns shrink -- but at the point where the scrollbar starts to
get hidden, the column widths stop reducing.
It would be nice if a horizontal scrollbar came on when the window got too
narrow for the pane's minimum width.
