the ability to have a text message sent to your cell phone notifying you of an
alarm.

so that when an alarm goes off the user will recieve a text message(probably
best if it were set individually per event)

Reproducible: Always

Only possible with a corresponding server implementation which is not gonna happen.

I disagree with this resolution. Most carriers allow SMS messages to be sent via email, so I think we could reasonably construe this bug to ensure that it's possible to configure email messages that will be readable on a tiny screen.

Summary: Cell phone notification alarms → Cell phone notification alarms (Text messages, SMS messages)
IMHO this functionality should probably be included as a Provider enhancement. This way the alerts will be coming from the Google Calendar (which already includes SMS sending functionality) and won't depend on having Thunderbird/Sunbird running at the time the alert is to be sent.

From reading about Provider it sounds as though alarm changes would require GUI changes in Lightening. Perhaps instead (or in the short term) a Provider preference check box could be added for including an SMS message in all alarms.
I would then recommend moving this to Provider/Gdata.
Sorry for the email. See also the following enhancement requests:
bug 389088
bug 282565
bug 403475
bug 401563 (dup)
I doubt this should be Google specific. While Googles does support SMS, this is not something that should only work for gdata.

Gdata will probably get sms and email alarms with or shortly after bug 353492.
If you read these other enhancements, you will see that although they are not duplicates, they are very similar:
https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=180890
https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=360799

The implementation of them all would probably fall within the same code.

Also, if you read this old enhancement:
https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=337906
somebody actually came up with the code changes necessary back in 2006 to implement 'running a script on an alarm'. At the time, it was not going to be implemented into Lightning, but with these other similar requests maybe it's time to open it back up and have another look.

So everybody go vote for these other enhancements, and also, let's try to get all the votes considered together to get the feature implemented.

Thanks
