I received the notice that a Firefox update was available and chose to do it.
After updating to 1.0.1, I noticed there was a red icon near the throbber when I
restarted Firefox. When I hovered over it, the tooltip indicated that there was
a cirtical update available. I check my Help->About and confirmed I was running
1.0.1. I then clicked on the icon and it brought up the windows saying that it
was checking for updates. This window indicated that there were no updates
available.

After you clicked through the wizard, did the update notification icon get cleared?
could this be the same as bug 255410? (tracy had mentioned that this bug had
been around for a while, iirc.)
Yes, after the wizard said there were no updates the icon did go away. There was
just a period of momentary confusion when I thought maybe I didn't really update
my browser.
