Browser crashes when a page with Java applet is loaded. The JRE plugin version
on my system is "Java Plug-in 1.4.2_02 for Netscape Navigator (DLL Helper)". It
worked fine when I was using Firefox 1.0.
Reproducible: Always
I was using Firefox 1.0. I uninstalled it and installed Firefox 1.0.1. I did not
reinstall Java. Is reinstallation of Java required???

Try 1.4.2_07 or 1.5.* as these are considerably more current.
Also you havn't got something odd like a GCC 295 plugin going in to a GCC 3 app
or visa versa have you?

Java problems are often caused by something going wrong with the Java
installation. Quoite often re-dowloading and reinstalling solves the problem.

There are also bugs about the adblock extensions blocking JAVA objects from
executing properly. If you have adblock installed, disabling it might also help.

Have been able to reproducse this on Linux Fedora 2, using
Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux i686; en-US; rv:1.7.8) Gecko/20050511 Firefox/1.0.4
version with Blackdown Java-Linux Java(TM) Plug-in1.4.1
Have also seen this on these sites as well:
http://www.facilities.uiowa.edu/kinnickcam/live.htm,
http://www.wearsauctioneering.com/index.html
http://emryauction.homestead.com/home.html
In my case I've confirmed that the contents of the plugins/java2 directory &
javaplugin_oji.so are identical to the ones in my mozilla 1.7.6 plugins
directory, and it's working fine with mozilla's navigator, but not with firefox
1.0.4.

This can be an issue on all OS, depending upon the Firefox and JRE versions.

This bug also causes hyperlinks to stop functioning in Firefox 1.0.x and Deer
Park Alpha 2. See bug 295045.
I have experienced this also. At URL http://www.marketwatch.com/tools/quotes/intchart.asp?siteid=mktw&symb=spx&x=0&y=0, depress the "JAVA" tab, and the browser will crash. I have also experienced intermittent crashes at one other site.
NOTE: The crash only seems to happen the FIRST time I go to that site on that day. After the crash on the initial visit, I don't seem to have problems again until the next day.
I have Firefox 1.5.0.4 running on a PC with XP O.S.

there are no backtraces in this bug and so at this point, who knows exactly what bug the original reporter was reporting? the fact that the entire browser can be taken down by a plugin is bug 156493, so i'll dupe this on that.
sam: if you've got a repeatable crash using a current sun JVM, please file a new bug.
