I am sorry to post this here, but I couldn't find a contact address to suggest
improvments.
I find it incredible important that my email client doesn't automatically mark
new messages as "read", because I only mark messages as read if I have finished
working on them.
Thunderbird is amazingly good, but please add this option (to not mark messages
automatically) as soon as possible. Thanks a million.

TB marks messages read when they've been, y'know, read: opening them into a
standalone window, or "previewing" them in the message pane. That latter point
can be controlled by not using the message pane (hide it, under the View menu)
or by setting a delay so it doesn't get marked immediately -- you can make the
delay pretty long, but not indefinite: bug 234121 comment 23. (Set the
preference under the Advanced options page.)
If you were unaware of this pref, and its behavior is sufficient for you, then
please mark this bug: Resolved | Invalid
If you are looking to have TB absolutely never mark the message read until you
explicitly say so, change this bug's severity to Enhancement -- and I'm afraid
it will get, at best, WontFix'd (at worst, never paid any attention to again).
