This should really be wontfixed and handed off to an extension. Few are going to know about, let alone use regular expressions.

Regular Expression Find (used for the old-style Find dialog) should provide a good starting point:

IMHO having this feature would be really, really nice. You have plenty of space in that search toolbar for another button "regex [search]" and devs or so will very likely appreciate it.
