The sender is NOT in my address book; Thunderbird does not flag it as Junk. When I received the mail it appeared to be an image in the preview window (but maybe it is just a carefully crafted table with background colours and larger fonts ???). When I flagged it as "junk", I got broken text where each fragment was a hyperlink to http://<name1>.swahilis.com/<name2>/<name3> where <name> seemed to be random names. Since I only got this mail once I cannot say if it is repeatable or not. In any way it was rendered differently when it was flagged as junk so apparently it sneaked through some security check(s)

your email was just plain HTML - no images.
When you flag it as junk, it is "sanitizing" the HTML
("[X] When displaying HTML messages marked as junk, sanitize the HTML" in the "Junk mail controls" dialog).
This is entirely separate to the "Block loading of remote images..." in the "Advanced" section of the "options", which applies to all emails equally, whether marked as junk or not.Status: UNCONFIRMED → RESOLVED
