I ran into this bug too. Tested with Firefox 1.5b1 Windows 98 version 4.10.1998 (1st edition) fresh install with only the drivers installed. Then used IEradicator2001a.exe to get rid of Internet Explorer. Always reproductible. 1. Run the setup program The small XX% Extracting window appears, and completes. Then the message "Verifying integrity of archive, please wait..." appears and promptly disappears. Then... nothing happens. Actual Results: Nothing happens, the installer dialog windows never shows up. However a truncated logfile is left at %TEMP%\ff_temp\install_status.log (i guess it's not complete because there is a "Start Log" at the beginning and no "End Log" at the end). I have attached the file. Sambe behavior is observed with the setup progams of Firefox 1.0.7 and Thunderbird 1.0.7. The person who marked this bug as a duplicate of bug 299449 is wrong, these two bug have nothing in common. Someone please change the status of this bug to confirmed.

I have tried another fresh install of Windows 98 4.10.1998 with only the drivers installed but this time i didn't used IEradicator : same results as comment #3. Instead i installed Internet Explorer 6 SP1 then tried again the Firefox installation program : it worked and installed just fine. My guess is that the Firefox and Thunderbird installers relies on some version of a Windows component installed or updated by the Internet Explorer installation program. It would be nice to know which component is necessary for the Firefox installation to run instead of being forced to install IE before fx on those "naked" Windows 98 installations.

Benjamin, I reopen this bug due to it's still happening for win98 installer builds while other OS don't show this issue. I had a discussion in the german newsgroup and like comment 3 already tells us, he was able to reproduce it with different language builds of 1.0.7 (de-DE and en-US).

This doesn't affect the NSIS installer which has been in use since Firefox 2.0. Resolving -> WONTFIX as it applies to fixing this bug for Firefox 1.5 since that is what this bug is about.
