If one could mark a certain date on a calender and then maybe send an email to
notify others. Maybe I could mark a person's birthday, but then I would have an
automated functionality to send an email to a person.

Fareed,
Emailing should already work if you have Calendar installed for Thunderbird.
Then you can set an email alarm on the day in question. The bug for email in
Sunbird/ calendar for Firefox is bug 237148. If you're asking for email support
in one of these versions, please resolve this bug as a duplicate of bug 237148.
If you're having a problem emailing events with Calendar in Thunderbird, please
elaborate on it. Thanks.
