How about giving the actual build ID? "the last 1.5 nightly" means nothing.

I tetsted today with the build from
ftp://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla.org/thunderbird/nightly/latest-mozilla1.8-1.5b2-l10n
build: 20051006
This build does not find my old profile on my computer (Linspire), but i have
found that the problem is caused by the linspire Thunderbird version. This
version created the profile dir .mozilla-thunderbird and the official Tb 1.0.7
uses the profile dir .thunderbird.
But i still think this is a Tb bug because i think that the official version
need to find this kind of profile folder (it does find the old netscape and
mozilla profiles).

I think the profiles on Linux for Thunderbird are at different locations for official builds, vs builds from, say, Ubuntu. I don't think Thunderbird should look for existing profiles located in different folders other than the official one.
Intended behaviour?

ok it can be intended but i think it is strange that Thunderbird find old Netscape profiles (and even can import outlook express profiles) and can't find his own profiles on a other distribution.

I'm not sure exactly why distributions use their own profile location, but there isn't anything we could (or rather should) do about it on our end. You can symlink the folder to work around it.
